The Moodle upgrade seemed to go okay but it meant doing an in-place upgrade of the OS(Ubuntu 14.04-->16.04). When I finally got the VM running again and reinstalling the LAMP stack all looked well but a week or two later a Moodle admin reported that he could't access the course admin menu or add it from the add-block list.
